Dr. Mycek Completes Training in New Procedure

Gloversville…

Women can now find a new procedure for permanent birth control at Nathan Littauer Hospital. Dr. John Mycek, board certified obstetrician/gynecologist was recently certified in the new procedure Essure after completing a training course in August. "This procedure has revolutionized permanent birth control," states Mycek. "There is no incision and in most cases, this procedure is performed without using general anesthesia. We generally send the person home the same day and they resume normal activity the following day."

This new method involves placing a small flexible device called a micro-insert into each of the woman's fallopian tubes. The micro-inserts are made up of metal and polyester fibers and have been used in different parts of the human body for many years. Over a period of three months, the body tissue grows into the micro-inserts, blocking the tubes to prevent fertilization from occurring.

Essure was approved by the FDA in November 2002. Prior to the Essure procedure, the only method for permanent birth control was a tubal ligation. This procedure requires an incision in the abdomen allowing access to the fallopian tubes. The tubes are then blocked with clips or cauterized in order to prevent fertilization from occurring. "Essure is designed to prevent pregnancy without an incision or surgical scar, explains Mycek. "It is a relatively painless procedure that takes about 15 minutes to perform."

Follow-up to Essure is minimal. "In 3 months, the patient returns for an X-ray. A radiopaque dye is instilled into the uterus. This is viewed on an X-ray machine and is used to confirm the total blockage of both of the fallopian tubes."
