For 110 years Littauer Has Set the Standard in Health Care! Gloversville…
"2003 was once again another busy year for Littauer" states Laurence E. Kelly, President/CEO of Littauer. "As we prepare to celebrate 110 years of service to the community, we also prepare to bring new services and technology to the area. We are the first hospital to have installed a 3-D ultrasound, which provides a more enhanced image. Our digital mammography and MRI have met the rigorous requirements for the American College of Radiology (ACR) accreditation. We welcomed a new urologist, ophthalmologist and anesthesiologist. We have completed the first phase in the expansion of our Emergency Department, a necessary improvement due to an increase in patient visits. Over 174 people throughout the area recognize the need for Lifeline, our personal emergency response system. Littauer's diabetes self-management program received prestigious recognition by the American Diabetes Association. We will still continue to grow and provide what the community needs throughout 2004."
Littauer also recently renovated the Women's Imaging Suite which houses the 3-D ultrasound. Unlike the traditional ultrasound, the 3-D ultrasound allows the physician to actually see tissue. It also provides Speckle Reduction Imaging (SRI) which allows for a more defined image with sharper resolution. The 3-D ultrasound is a particularly useful tool for obstetricians.
In addition to DEXA scanning for osteoporosis and stereotactic breast biopsy technology, the Women's Imaging Suite also includes our FDA approved and ACR accredited digital mammography department. "Digitizing mammograms revolutionizes breast care," states Dr. Tariq Gill, Littauer's Co-Medical Director of Diagnostic Imaging. "It allows us to offer the community state-of-the-art mammograms with the least possible hassle and disruption to their lives. It also gives our referring physicians accurate images to use in diagnosis. But our radiologists go one step further. . . if a women is diagnosed with breast cancer we are there personally to consult with them, provide support services for them and their family, and help them find the best options for treatment and community support."
Littauer has added Essure™, a new procedure for permanent birth control. Dr. John Mycek, board certified obstetrician/gynecologist was recently certified in Essure™ after completing a training course in August. "This procedure has revolutionized permanent birth control," states Mycek. "There is no incision and in most cases, this procedure is performed without using general anesthesia. We generally send the person home the same day and they resume normal activity the following day."
This new method involves placing a small flexible device called a micro-insert into each of the woman's fallopian tubes. The micro-inserts are made up of metal and polyester fibers and have been used in different parts of the human body for many years. Over a period of three months, the body tissue grows into the micro-inserts, blocking the tubes to prevent fertilization from occurring. "Essure™ is designed to prevent pregnancy without an incision or surgical scar, explains Mycek. "It is a relatively painless procedure that takes about 15 minutes to perform." For more information about Essure™, contact Dr. Mycek's office at 773-5662.
"The future looks bright for Littauer and the community," Kelly states. "By continually adding new services and procedures, we are demonstrating our commitment to high quality healthcare. Our community deserves to have access to the most advanced technologies available and the most competent professionals providing healthcare services." *** |
