Littauer's Reverend Orth to Visit Guatemala

Gloversville…

Bonnie Orth, Chaplain and Pastoral Care Coordinator at Nathan Littauer Hospital and Nursing Home, will be participating in a project called "Women Walking Together", a collaborative effort to help raise awareness about domestic violence. Reverend Orth will be traveling to different cities in Guatemala to lead Bible studies, facilitate workshops on domestic violence and to conduct worship services. In addition, she will be training elementary school teachers about the signs and symptoms of domestic abuse to help raise awareness in the school system.

"Domestic violence is a huge problem in Central America, specifically Guatemala. Currently there are no domestic violence shelters in Guatemala City and only one in the whole country" explains Orth. "Domestic violence has become a part of the culture and we need to work at changing the culture's message, even if it is just one person at a time."

Reverend Orth is being hosted by CEDEPCA, an ecumenical institution in Central America that provides tools for women to understand and work on ending domestic violence.

Reverend Orth has been employed at Littauer for almost a year. Her responsibilities as Chaplain and Pastoral Care Coordinator include coordinating the pastoral care offered by volunteer community clergy and providing pastoral guidance to both patients and staff of all denominations. Reverend Orth is also the Pastor of Mayfield Central Presbyterian Church.

Reverend Orth resides in Amsterdam with her husband, Jay. They have four children, Bob, John Henry, Evan and Olivia.
