Littauer Participates in National "Time Out" Day

Gloversville…

Nathan Littauer Hospital and Nursing Home recently participated in the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses' (AORN) National "Time Out" Day. The purpose of National Time Out Day is to highlight the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) Universal Protocol and other steps the healthcare community is taking to reduce errors, and to encourage patients to become full partners in decisions about their care and treatment.

Specifically with surgical procedures, patients and their families are encouraged to have ongoing communication to reinforce the correct site for the surgical procedure. National "Time Out" Day demonstrates the importance of taking a "time out" prior to the incision of a patient. The "time out" is taken in order to verify patient identity, surgical site and surgical procedure. To stress the importance of better communication, Littauer's Operating Room/Recovery Room (OR/RR) put up posters and handed out flyers to raise the awareness of staff and patients.

"At Littauer, everyone involved in the care of patients are dedicated to preventing any harm from occurring to patients," states Nan Jones, RN and manager of the OR/RR. " We strongly encourage patients and their families to become actively involved in their healthcare, to ask questions and to participate in all decisions".
