Media Policies

Members of the media are not permitted to be on campus without prior approval. Our campus extends from East State Street to Easterly Street and includes all parking lots and access roads throughout the campus. If directed, staff will meet members of the media at the hospital’s gatehouse, a gray house located at 97 E. State St., adjacent to the hospital’s main entrance. Nathan Littauer requires that a staff person from the marketing/public relations department accompany all reporters, photographers and television crews visiting our campus from the moment they arrive on campus to when they leave the property.  This policy is strictly adhered to for the protection and privacy of our patients. Also, we reserve the right to ask members of the press to leave if patient care may be comprised. If you have any questions regarding a press release or to arrange an interview during business hours contact us by phone at 518-775-4194 or email us at: dpike@nlh.org. After office hours, please call the hospital’s main number at 518-725-8621 and ask to speak to the media representative on call.

Guidelines on Patient Information:

Members of the media may obtain a condition report on a patient by calling the Public Relations office at 518-775-4194. If you receive a voicemail, please remember to include your name, organization, phone number and first and last name of the patient.

Hospitals and health systems are responsible for protecting the privacy and confidentiality of their patients and patient information. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) mandates our regulations that govern privacy standards for healthcare information. Nathan Littauer provides all patients with the option to join our facility patient directory as required by federal law. Patients are given the opportunity to opt out of the patient directory. If a patient chooses to opt out of the directory, no patient condition can be provided, nor can we confirm that the patient is at our facility. If a patient chooses not to opt out of the directory, Nathan Littauer can only provide a one-word response when the condition of an individual is requested. Members of the media must provide the correct first and last name in order to expedite condition information. Patients must sign a media release to be interviewed or photographed. Nathan Littauer can delay any request for condition on patients arriving in our emergency department as the patient must be approached about whether or not they wish to opt out of our facility patient directory upon admission as stated above.

A patient’s condition will be provided in the following manner: good, fair, serious, critical or undetermined.

  • Good – Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious and comfortable. Indicators are excellent.
  • Fair – Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious but may be uncomfortable. Indicators are favorable.
  • Serious – Vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits. Patient is acutely ill. Indicators are questionable.
  • Critical – Vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits. Patient may be unconscious. Indicators are unfavorable.
  • Undetermined – Patient is awaiting physician and/or assessment
