GLOVERSVILLE, NY – In celebration of National Friends of Libraries Week 2022 in October, the Friends of the Gloversville Public Library presented the first baby born the week of October 16 at The Nathan Littauer Birthing Center with a basket of books, clothing, and other gifts.
Rylie Varin was born at Nathan Littauer’s Birthing Center at 3:13 p.m. on October 16, 2022, making her the gift recipient. She weighed 6 pounds 12 ounces, and was 20 inches long. She is the daughter of Ashley Groves and Adam Varin, of Amsterdam.

“We were not expecting this,” said Groves. “It is an incredibly nice gesture, and we can’t wait to read some of the books to her.”
Friends of the Gloversville Public Library President Jean LaPorta, and Friends of the Gloversville Public Library Vice President Patty Franco, said the organization does this activity annually for the first baby born at Nathan Littauer during National Friends of Libraries Week. Together, the organization has been donating the gift basket for 10 years.
“We love doing this” LaPorta said. “We hope these books will encourage an admiration of reading in the child, and that when they are old enough, they will choose to visit our library to read many more books.”
This gift basket from the Friends of the Gloversville Public Library is made annually by member donations.
