Taking your lungs on vacation Posted on August 18, 2010 by Dakota PikeWhen the news wanted to know how to travel with a lung condition, they turned to Barbara Deluca, Respiratory Care Therapist at Nathan Littauer Hospital. She helped create a program at Littauer called, ” Taking your lungs on vacation”.Consider this: many people with a lung condition like asthma or COPD, opt to stay home because of their apprehension to travel. If Nathan Littauer Respiratory Therapists have their way, more people with lung conditions will join the ranks of those taking an old fashioned summer vacation. Nathan Littauer is offering some advice and some practical tips for people with lung disease planning on traveling this summer.“Getting ready to go on vacation is always a lot of work, but if you have breathing problems that require you to be on oxygen, an inhaler or a nebulizer, planning for a trip can sometimes seem overwhelming.” stated Barbara Deluca, Respiratory Care Therapist at Nathan Littauer Hospital.It doesn’t have to be that way say respiratory therapists from the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC). Ms. Deluca adds, “I want people to know that their lung disease should not hinder them from enjoying life. Camp SuperStarrs is nominated for an Emmy Posted on August 11, 2010August 16, 2012 by Dakota Pike Representatives from Channel 6 share the news with “campers” recently. Gloversville, NY…It was not a typical day at Camp SuperStarrs July 28th.. On top of all their camp fun, they also had an Emmy Party. Why? A story about Camp SuperStarrs submitted by CBS 6 News earned an Emmy Nomination this spring. Only five stories received nominations. Wayne McNeil, RRT and camp co-founder, was quick to share the exciting news with Littauer officials. “It was unexpected and exciting news.” He added, “The legacy of Camp SuperStarrs is one that will hopefully continue throughout my lifetime and beyond. The more people who know about it the better.” Sue McNeil, Assistant Director for Camp SuperStarrs stated, “I was breathless at the nomination.”Watch the special message and the orginal Emmy nominated piece here:For 31 years Nathan Littauer Hospital has hosted the camp for children with medical limitations. “Not only do we think you are a superstar, so does the Emmys!” explained Reporter Jerry Gretzinger in a taped message played for the kids at the camp. The “Take a Break” report on Camp SuperStarrs first aired August 6th of 2009 and was among the Emmy nominated entries for the same year in the “Children’s Programming” category.Camp SuperStarrs celebrates with an Emmy cake“We wanted to share it with our campers, so we had an Emmy party complete with a cake and song. We also hosted representatives from Channel 6 for the festivities.” said Susan McNeil. Thursday, the children watched the special message from Mr. Gretzinger and enjoyed a cake adorned with an Emmy. “We always knew this was a special place, and now thanks to the fine people at Channel 6, the entire country knows about Camp SuperStarrs” added Sue McNeil. She continued, “We have had a lot of fun saying, ‘We are the Emmy nominated Camp SuperStarrs of Littauer.’”“The children were very excited Thursday. You could hear a pin drop while they watched their special message from Jerry Gretzinger.” said, Cheryl McGrattan Hospital Spokesperson. Fulton County’s First Pharmaceutical Collection Slated for August Posted on August 11, 2010August 16, 2012 by Dakota PikeFulton County’s First Pharmaceutical Collection Slated for AugustAugust 14, a day to dispose of these safelyOn Saturday, Aug. 14 the Fulton County Department of Solid Waste will present the first ever county-wide Pharmaceutical Drop-Off Day from 7 a.m.-noon.The pharmaceutical collection is a cooperative effort between several local agencies, including the DSW, Fulton County Sheriff’s Department, Fulton County Public Health, and the Gloversville-Johnstown Joint Wastewater Treatment Facility. ASAP’s Promise, a division of the HFM Prevention Council, has also offered to distribute information on the program.“Most people have heard that flushing medicines can harm the environment. This program gives Fulton County residents a way to dispose of old medicine in an environmentally responsible manner,” said Jeff Bouchard, Solid Waste Director. Baseball and Breast Cancer Posted on July 9, 2010August 16, 2012 by Dakota PikeLittauer partners with the Amsterdam Mohawks to get the word out about mammograms.Gloversville, -“It seemed like an unlikely partnership, baseball and breast cancer, but the passion was there and we ran with it.” stated Cheryl McGrattan Nathan Littauer Hospital spokesperson. The Hospital has joined forces with the Amsterdam Mohawks to try and spread the word about the importance of mammogram screenings. Ms. McGrattan added, “We want every woman in our area to know that mammograms can save lives. And we will use the power of the Amsterdam Mohawks to try and spread the word.”As part of their Radiology Revolution campaign (www.radiologyrevolution.com) Nathan Littauer is hosting a breast cancer awareness night. The baseball game will feature baseball players wearing pink, and breast cancer survivors throwing out the opening pitches. Nathan Littauer is celebrating their new mammogram screening facility in Perth. The team has even ordered pink jerseys to try and get the message out to women in this area to get their mammograms.Amsertdam Mohawks celebrate our new mammogram machine“Simply put, we need to improve the utilization rates of mammogram services in this area” stated Patrice McMahon, Vice President of Primary Care Services. And Littauer is using social media to get the word out as well. “On our Face Book page we are starting a 100 reasons program. It is a challenge to our fans to find 100 reasons for women to get their mammograms on our Face Book site.” stated Cheryl McGrattan. The facility earned the award from the New York State Department of Health. According to the award, “Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home is recognized for excellence in preventing pressure ulcers in nursing home residents.” The award continued, “Your facility was one of 24 nursing homes across the state to receive an award.” The nursing home is ranked in the top 4% of the “Best Performer” category. As a result of the superior performance Nathan Littauer Nursing Home received an award of $42,645. The award is based on data the nursing home regularly submits to the Department of Health.Our Nursing Home Earns AwardThe program called “Pay for Performance Initiative” PHL 2808 (22) authorizes the payment of rate enhancements to nursing homes which meet or exceed defined quality measures. Pressure ulcer prevention is one of those measures.“I can not stress enough how important this recognition is for our facility.” stated Leslie Beadle, Nathan Littauer Nursing Home Administrator and Vice President, adding, “This is an area that we have been working on for many years.
