FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Littauer’s THE EVENT 2010 explores the exotic

Supporters will journey down the Nile under a suradeq

without even leaving Johnstown

Gloversville, NY…The Foundation for Nathan Littauer Hospital has announced their plans for the 8th annual “EVENT”, a yearly fundraising gala supporting the hospital. THE EVENT will be held May 21, 2010 from 7-11 pm. This year, supporters will be treated to “A Journey Along The Nile”, in an extravagant setting under a suradeq(Arabic for tent). “A huge tent will be transformed into an Egyptian palace, immersing party goers with the sights, sounds and flavors of Egypt.” stated Cheryl Horowitz, THE EVENT Chair. “We have had some exciting themes in the past but I think this year will be over the top.” added Susan Kiernan, Vice President of Development for Littauer. She explained, “Simply put, it is a great party for a great cause.”

The Foundation will be providing food and entertainment designed to compliment the luxurious setting. The tent will be next to Ruby and Quiri, on Route 30A in Johnstown. People are encouraged to wear desert garb. According to event planners, there will be lounges and private tents and the entire venue will be accented with the colors, fabrics, and tastes of the exotic.

THE EVENT is a unique yearly gala, raising money to support the Hospital. Hundreds of people attend to support the cause, and in turn are treated to great music and entertainment. Every year THE EVENT features a different theme. Past themes have included: New York, New York, The Great Gatsby, An Evening on the Orient Express, and The Era of the Great Adirondack Camps. “And responses to THE EVENT are always extremely positive. Last year one attendee told us “This is the best event in our area, and the food was amazing!” stated Cheryl Horowitz.

“THE EVENT is not only a good party it is apparently a great regional success.” explained Laurence E. Kelly, Nathan Littauer Hospital’s CEO and President. This year, THE EVENT was ranked by the Capital District Business Review’s Book of Lists as The 25th Most Profitable One-day Fundraising Event. He added, “We are proud of that distinction, however I can tell you that almost a full year’s-worth of planning goes into THE EVENT. And we are always thrilled with the community’s response to this gala.” Proceeds from THE EVENT go directly to the hospital, helping to buy equipment and medical supplies for physicians and staff to continually improve patient care.

New this year, THE EVENT will offer a discount to young people in a category deemed “Aspiring Patron”. “We wanted younger professionals to experience THE EVENT and to learn about the hospital in the process.” Cheryl Horowitz said. “Aspiring patron” tickets are $75.00 and “Loyal Supporters” ticket prices are $125.00. “Super Patrons” tickets are $250.00. Also new this year, The Foundation is offering silent auctions to the entire community via the web. “Every year we have extraordinary raffles and auction items.” stated Susan Kiernan. “This year will be no different. However, this year we are offering the items through the web and our Face Book page. Our staff will act as buyers for anyone from anywhere who would like to bid on the items. I think that is exciting.”

Also new this year, the silent auction items and the raffle items will be available to all through the World Wide Web. “We are using the power of our website and Facebook to raise money for our hospital.” stated Susan Kiernan. Adding, “We did not want to limit the items to just the attendees and employees this year.” To see the items log on to https://www.nlh.org/nlhblog/nlh-photo-gallery for an online catalogue.

“Every year we are so grateful for the support we receive from the community.” Susan Kiernan said. “It is more than a party; it is simply a great cause.”

To buy tickets or to learn more about supporting the Hospital people are encouraged to call THE EVENT planning center at 773-5505 or by emailing theevent@nlh.org.

Nathan Littauer Hospital and Family of HealthServices serves Fulton, Montgomery and Hamilton Counties Upstate New York with a full-service 74-bed hospital, eight primary care centers, 84-bed nursing home and a community education center. The hospital opened 116 years ago, has 950 employees and recently opened a new Birthing Center. The hospital will be opening a new Emergency Care Center this spring.

Littauer’s Perth Primary Care Center Adds Diagnostic Capabilities

Mammogram screenings, dexa bone scans, x-rays are now available, as center explodes in growth.

Perth, NY…Littauer’s Perth Primary Care Center located on Highway 30 in Perth, is now offering mammogram screenings, Dexa bone scans and x-rays services of the lungs and limbs. “The service is available to anyone with a doctor’s order, you need not be a Littauer patient.” stated Hospital Spokesperson Cheryl McGrattan.

Perth site adds Diagnostic Services

Mammogram screenings are generalized exams, used to evaluate breast health. Dexa (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) bone scans are a means of measuring bone density. It is the most widely used and most thoroughly studied bone density measurement technology. The Dexa Scan is typically used to diagnose and follow osteoporosis. “Bone health should be taken very seriously.” stated Hospital Spokesperson Cheryl McGrattan. She continued, “According to statistics 50% of all woman and 25% of all men over the age of 50 will have an osto-related fracture in their lifetime.” She added, “And according to GE Healthcare “20% of patients will die within one year of a hip fracture. Bone health is serious. And we are so pleased we can offer this service now, as May is osteoporosis month.”

“Undoubtedly this is a huge boon to this area. Any time we bring preventative and diagnostic services into the community, our area benefits.” stated Jan Carstens, MD, a practitioner at the Perth site. She explained, “I am thrilled to offer this convenience to my patients.”

The new diagnostic equipment is housed in the center’s new expansion. In February Littauer finished the expansion to their primary care center. The addition adds about 2000 feet in new treatment and office space. “The expansion is barely noticeable from the street” stated Laurence E. Kelly, Hospital President and CEO, “but it gives us valuable elbow room.” He added, “Simply put, the center is exploding in growth!”

The expansion is due to a huge influx in patient visits to the center. In 2008 the center had 10,123 visits and in 2009 they reported 15,448 visits, an increase of 53%. Littauer also added 3 additional primary and specialty care physicians to the center in 2009. The physical expansion includes more treatment areas, diagnostic imaging capabilities and soon it will have greater access to parking.

The center’s hours are 8:30 am to 5:00 Monday thru Friday. The facility also offers lab services, seeing about 20 patients a day. Lab services are offered from 8:00am to 3:00 pm Monday thru Friday.

“We knew we could add more space if need be, but we thought that might be warranted in a few years time not in a few months.” Mr. Kelly explained. He stated, “Our Perth Primary Care Center is our mission realized- bringing our services into the community.”

Stewart’s to give comfort to NLH

Littauer to rock more children to sleep

Stewarts provides money for new rockers

Gloversville, NY…The Stewart’s Holiday Match Program recently awarded $3,432 to Nathan Littauer Hospital. “This was a timely gift; one we will use immediately to purchase four rocker/gliders.” stated Susan Kiernan, Vice President of Development. Providing the check was Sarah Baker of Stewart’s.

The gliders will be used in Pediatrics and in the New Birthing Center. “Children, whether they are newborns or sick, love to be rocked,” stated Susan Kiernan. “Sometimes in healing, the simplest things can have the greatest impact. That is surely the case with these rockers.”

“It is a beautiful thing to see a baby rocked to sleep.” Kim Colvin manager of Littauer’s New Birthing Center and Pediatric unit explained. She added, “We are so grateful for the generosity of Stewart’s Holiday Match Program.”
