Stewart’s Holiday Match supports Littauer’s littlest patients

The Nathan Littauer Foundation is proud to announce that with the support of the Stewarts Holiday Match Program, a donated check of $5800 will be used for care of infants in Littauer’s Birthing Center. This generous donation allows Littauer to give newborns the best possible start to life.

The Birthing Center will use the funds to purchase a new infant scale for the unit.

Littauer announces Matt Romell, Goodwill Employee of the Year

GLOVERSVILLE, NEW YORK (February 14, 2017) – Nathan Littauer Hospital & Nursing Home announces Matthew Romell as the 2016 Goodwill Employee of the Year. Romell is a MIS System Administrator on the main hospital campus. He was presented the award by Littauer President and CEO, Laurence E. Kelly before a gathering of his friends, family, Littauer staff and administrators. Romell has been a Littauer employee for four years this month.

“Although only here for a short time, Matt has made a long-term and enjoyable impression at Littauer,” said Kelly. “Matt is a professional team player who treats everyone with courtesy and respect along with a smile and great sense of humor. He always finds the solution.”

“I appreciate this, but it’s very easy for me because I work with such a great team,” said Romell.

Littauer has almost 1000 employees. Romell was nominated by his peers for this top honor. “Matt meets everyday challenges with a positive attitude,” said Goodwill Committee Chairperson Brenda Hammons. “In the time he has been here, he has made a notable difference with so many technical issues,” Hammons added.

In a blind format, the Goodwill Committee narrowed the scope of nominations to three top finalists. First runner-up honors went to Nora Albertin, Human Resource Generalist in Littauer’s Human Resources Department. The second runner-up award went to Tammy Gerdes, Littauer’s Senior Mammography Technologist. Both Albertin and Gerdes received a check and a gift certificate to the hospital’s gift shop.

Romell received along with his honor flowers, a cake, gift certificate, check, the coveted year-long prime parking spot, and a plaque on Littauer’s Wall of Fame.

Nancy Quinlan receives Goodwill Award for 4th-quarter

GLOVERSVILLE, NEW YORK (February 2, 2017) – Nathan Littauer Hospital & Nursing Home honored Nancy Quinlan, RN, IBCLC OSC, with the 2016 fourth-quarter Goodwill Award. Quinlan is a lactation consultant with the Nathan Littauer Hospital Birthing Center. She was presented the award by Littauer President and CEO, Laurence E. Kelly before a gathering of her peers.

“Nancy has made a real difference in the short time she has been at Littauer,” said Kelly. “Whoever you are, you will receive the best Nancy has to offer.”

Quinlan’s outstanding compassion has been celebrated with hundreds of new mothers.

“I am so honored. I love what I do. I feel like I make a difference, and like everyone is an extension of my family,” said Quinlan. “I’m here to stay.”

Recipients for the award are nominated by NLH employees, providers or patients and submitted to the Goodwill Committee. They are selected in a blind format.

Quinlan received a plaque and a check along with her special honor.

GLOVERSVILLE – On Thursday, Aug. 11, Nathan Littauer Hospital & Nursing Home honored Matthew Romell with the 2016 second-quarter Goodwill Award. Romell is a MIS System Administrator. He was presented the award by Littauer President and CEO, Laurence E. Kelly before a gathering of his peers. Romell has been a Littauer employee since February of 2013.

Kelly pointed out that it takes different kinds of people in a variety of roles to deliver exceptional healthcare.

“It takes Littauer different kinds of people in different kinds of roles,” said Kelly. “Some are behind the scenes, but it takes all 1,000 of us to do everything we do.”

With nominations from multiple departments, Romell’s character and work ethic were identified as exemplary. According to those who nominated him, Romell exhibits outstanding professionalism and makes employees’ jobs easier – all with a great attitude and smile. He exhibits Littauer’s organizational values of integrity, compassion, collaboration, accountability, respect and excellence.

“I say this all the time, I love working here and I love the people I work with,” said Romell. “This award is really a surprise, and I appreciate it.”

Hospital plans new primary care location along Thruway to serve residents — and truckers

The community hospital in Gloversville is looking to open its 10th outpatient location, Nathan Littauer Hospital & Nursing Home CEO Laurence E. Kelly said.
The hospital is seeking state approval to build a $2.2 million extension clinic in Fonda, a small village about 15 minutes west of Amsterdam. There is a lack of health care services in the area and Montgomery County has a poverty rate for children of about 23 percent, Kelly said.
“We looked at Fonda as a place that’s underserved that has a lot of health care need, so we thought this would be a great place to meet that community need,” Kelly said.
Hospitals are working to get services closer to patients as government payers push for care in lower cost settings.
Kelly also said the location would be ideal to provide services for truckers traveling along the Thruway or going northward to a distribution center in Johnstown. About 800 trucks each day will drive by the location on Main Street in Fonda, he said.
Kelly said he’s planning to create an app so truck drivers could set up an appointment ahead of time for a check-up or an acute problem.
“These guys and women don’t get good health care because they’re on the road a lot,” Kelly said.
The clinic would be fairly close to St. Mary’s Healthcare in Amsterdam, which is a larger system providing services in Fulton and Montgomery counties that Nathan Littauer competes with. St. Mary’s has 130 beds and opened a new $17 million outpatient pavilion last month.
While Kelly said the clinic would likely see a high volume of Medicaid patients, he said the hospital would have adult services, radiology and an obstetrician there. Referrals for testing, deliveries of babies and other services to the hospital would also drive revenue from the location.
“We don’t think we’re going to lose money, we think we can break even or do a little better,” Kelly said.
Kelly said the plan for a clinic is exploratory pending state approval. He said current plans call for a 5,400 square foot building with 30 parking spaces and that the land at 46-50 Main St. in Fonda is under contract for the hospital to purchase.
The clinic would be staffed with 13 new full time employees, including two new doctors, Kelly said.
