NLH Going Pink

GLOVERSVILLE, NY – This October, Nathan Littauer Hospital & Nursing Home is focused on increasing awareness for breast cancer prevention. According to Breastcancer.org, breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women. Roughly one in eight women born in the United States will develop breast cancer in their lives. Studies have also shown that women with dense breasts are more likely to have or develop cancer. However, most women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early.

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Littauer is creating a marketing campaign to move beyond mammogram education and to include conversation about breast density.

“With the recent installation of Invenia ABUS 2.0™ at Littauer, it is much easier to detect breast cancer in addition with a regular mammogram,” says Dwayne Eberle, Director of Diagnostic Imaging. “The ABUS 2.0™ has improved breast cancer detection by an estimated 36 percent. I am thrilled that we can now offer ABUS, a leading edge technology, to women with dense breasts. This simple 15 minute procedure will save lives in our community.”

“ABUS Ultrasound for dense breasts is our newest example of supporting our patients,” says Priscilla. “With the capability to further test women with dense breasts for abnormalities which can hide in regular Mammography, this can and will save lives. Everyone who has their mammogram with Littauer will receive a special gift from our Diagnostic Imaging department, too. We want to show women that we are here for them and let them know that having their mammograms is vitally important.”

“Some organizations and hospitals display pink ribbons for Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” says Cheryl McGrattan, Vice President of Marketing and Communications with Littauer. “We build whole new centers and bring in the best technology to prevent breast cancer. For us at Littauer, we think pink all year long.”

Talk to your doctor about breast density, especially if you have a history of breast or ovarian cancer. Your doctor can provide more information about mammograms. Littauer earns Nuclear Medicine ACR Accreditation

Nathan Littauer Hospital has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in nuclear medicine as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Nuclear medicine is a branch of medical imaging that uses small amounts of radioactive material, ingested by the patient, to diagnose and treat a variety of disease, including many types of cancers, heart disease, and certain other abnormalities within the body.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.

“Use the card for something special for you, for your family, but please take advantage of this special health incentive” said Cheryl McGrattan, Littauer’s Vice President of Marketing and Communications. “Just get here!”

Breast Cancer Awareness…

     And A Call To Action!

Every October, Nathan Littauer’s Family of Health Services is proud to participate in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  The goal is to increase awareness about the importance of breast screening. But, more importantly, we want to call women (and men) to action.  After all, it’s not the awareness but the action that follows that can make a difference in your health…and life!

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), breast cancer is THE most common cancer found in women, and the second leading cause of cancer death in women (second only to lung cancer).  About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point.  The American Cancer Society reports that the incidence is 1 in 1000 for men, so much less common but a very real threat.

Although those statistics can seem scary, the good news is that the earlier breast cancer is found and treated, the better the chance of survival.

So this year, YES – become more aware…but PLEASE – answer the call to action!

  • Women and men alike should talk to their health care provider about their personal risk of developing breast cancer.
  • If you are a woman age 40 to 49, talk with your doctor about when to start getting mammograms and how often to get them.
  • If you are a woman age 50 to 74, be sure to get a mammogram at least every 2 years.  Again, talk to your doctor about your risk for breast cancer, especially if a close family member of yours has had breast or ovarian cancer.  Your doctor can help you decide when and how often to get mammograms.

We KNOW you want to be there for your family…so what are YOUR excuses?

  • Not enough time? Littauer’s Mammography Centers in Gloversville and Perth offer appointments starting at 7 a.m., and special evening hours are available as well.  It only takes 30 minutes of your time, from start to finish!
  • Concerned about discomfort? Our compassionate technologists have decades of experience, and our state of the art technology is the best.  Any discomfort is minimal and over before you know it!
  • No insurance coverage?  Littauer is a partner in a free cancer screening program through the New York State Department of Health which covers breast, cervical and colorectal screenings!  For details, call the Cancer Services Program at 841-3726.

Remember…early detection IS the best protection!
